Additional Experience

In order to reach the top, a resume acts as a flight of stairs. A good one though acts as an escalator.

The experience section will be the first segment after your contact information in your resume. It must contain circumstantial information about your employment history. This is the most important module of your resume. The more experience you have in the industry, you will require extra cautiousness to mention and omit out details about your employment in this section. A job description should include your previous jobs and mention specifically the roles you have done. It will tell your previous experiences and explain the roles you have performed earlier and with that, the company can analyse how you will be helpful for the company you are applying into now.

What’s included in the Experience Section of the resume?

To understand this, one must know the purpose of the experience section in a resume. This is to provide details to your employer about your past jobs, titles and companies you worked for over the past years. This creates an impression of your career to your employer to understand you better. In a perfect resume, your career arc must reflect growth. This is to say that over the years your resume must show that you have added new skills, learnings and handled more responsibilities than your past.

This segment must market you as an ambitious, hardworking and a forward going candidate. You may feel to rule out information regarding skills and experiences in unrelated fields while crafting your resume, but at times, it only makes your resume stronger than that of other candidates, as it goes to show that you have interest in diverse subjects. However, it is okay to leave out jobs that don’t fit the journey you wish to take your employer to.

Writing the experience section

First up, make a list of companies that you have worked for, along with the dates of employment, the positions you held and brief descriptions of your responsibilities, with keywords and a list of related achievements.

This part of the resume is written in the reverse sequential order, starting with your current position, all the way to internships and temporary typically taken up during the first years of one’s career.

If you have a long career record you would not need to mention every job that you have worked. Remember a resume must be concise, typically one to two page long. However, freshers who would not have a lot of job experience must mention every job possible.

Here are two examples to illustrate how early jobs can be filled on your resume (only for candidates with 10+ years of job experience

  • Additional experience includes bookkeeping jobs at Speed Books Ltd. (2007-2008), Caleb’s Fast food Joint (2008-2009) and Shelby’s Accounting firm (2009-2011)
  • Additional experience includes early roles at Shell & Co. and Tata Industries.

How much experience to list

Ideally, a resume should contain information about your position in the last 10-15 years. Beyond that period, you are not required to mention roles if it is irrelevant to the current position being applied for.

At times it is harmful to mention older job positions, especially in the tech industry. It may advertise your expertise in older technology which is now obsolete and would give an impression to the employer that you do not have the required skill set to work with the current technology, even though you have updated yourself with the needful.

Writing resume job descriptions

As mentioned earlier, you would be required to furnish the details of your title, the organization’s name, the years you worked for the company and a short description of your job and achievements.

A very common mistake that amateurs do is to list their tasks at their jobs. This segment gives you the opportunity to call attention to your abilities and achievements. Use keyword and illustrate that you helped your company to achieve its goals. It would be beneficial to you if you could do it with mentioning a monetary value, especially if you are applying in the sales or its ancillary departments.

Use bullets, colour coded symbols to highlight your achievements from your job descriptions. It will be very smart to mention quantifiable achievements such as sales figures, growth percentages and other accomplishments.

Here are a few resume samples to help you design your resume.

Consistency is the beauty in designing resumes. Remember that the employer probably has a lot of resumes to go through. There are chances that he/she might not spend time in a non-attractive resume. Be consistent in the format of the resume. Choose the same font size for every detail. Of you choose to use bullets for mentioning your current job position, other jobs must also be mentioned in bullet points. Make sure to use proper alignment for each and every section.
